An Interview with Leeann…

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you’ve been an active member on Shanghai Stuff for even a week, you’ve probably come across Leeann’s girly blog posts or her profusion of self-portraits. She’s one of the most well-known members on the site despite keeping to herself most of the time, and few have had the pleasure to meet her in real life. We bring Leeann to you in our second issue of MOZIMOGO and talk to her about growing up in New Zealand, what type of man she would date, and her point of view on friendship.
DanielOk, first things first. Is that your natural hair color?
Leeann: It’s dyed. My natural hair color is dark brown.
You’re Shanghainese but grew up in New Zealand. What was your life there like?
I was in Auckland for around 12 years. My high school years were very similar to the movie Mean Girls. Or even Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl. All my friends were girls, and my best girl friend was a Japanese girl. I was extremely popular at that time, and almost all the Asians there knew who I was. I was always shopping for the latest bags and fashion. I traveled on the weekends to the beach and other popular areas just for fun, and drifted cars with friends. I rarely went to bars or nightclubs. I preferred driving down the road in my car listening to Mariah Carey. My home life was quiet. Just read books and watched movies. I also spent a lot of time at Starbucks or other coffee shops with my laptop and a good book or magazine.
If he isn’t a gentleman, and if he isn’t good enough for me, then he shouldn’t waste his time or mine.
Hold on. Did you just say you drifted cars?
Most of my friends back in New Zealand are wealthy and they normally have more expensive hobbies, like drifting. They were part of professional teams and attended competitions like D1 Japan, etc. I eventually got involved and learned how to drift as well. It was just one of my hobbies.
So how does life in Auckland compare with life in Shanghai?
It was extremely laid back and relaxing, and most people living in New Zealand are quite rich and well off. Didn’t really worry about living day to day. But in Shanghai it’s quite the opposite.
Which city do you consider your home?
For settling down and having a family, I consider New Zealand my home. But for career and working hard in my youth, I prefer … not even Shanghai. I would choose New York.
Do you ever take the bus? Just curious.
I did once in London, and I’ve taken tour buses a few times. But normally I drive.
What do you do here, career-wise?
I was an economic analyst for hedge funds, hunting for intermarket and inter-contract arbitrage opportunities. Also did weekly and yearly reports on macroeconomy. Recently I started to help coordinate luxury fashion events that target the upper echelons of society in China and abroad.
Are you more of a princess or a career woman?
Outside at work I can be strong and determined. I have many ambitions as well, but when at home I am a princess. I guess I’m both. Just depends on the environment.
You know, you and your sister are like a husband and wife couple. Especially when you two bicker about driving routes.
I regretted losing the time we didn’t have together while I lived in New Zealand. Once I came back to Shanghai I really cherished her and spend as much time with her and my family as possible.
What are your favorite TV shows?
Gossip Girl, because I like Blair a lot and it reminds me of my high school years. 90210 (the new one), because my lifestyle in New Zealand was exactly the same as this show. And Desperate Housewives, because in every episode you can learn something about different types of families. And my dream is to be the perfect wife, to raise children and such.
